Description

In this lesson students improve their fluency skills through speaking. This lesson starts with warm up by simple introduction to the topic then, show students some pictures related to the topic to elicit the topic title from students.Then teacher shows students some word pictures of sports and activities, then students are asked about sports and activities whether they practice or follow. After that, students watch a video about sports. Next, students are asked about the top five sports and fitness activities in USA. Then in pairs they are asked to make a list of other sports and activities they like and order them from the most favorite to the least one. In groups students differentiate among Go, Do, and Play with sports in a collocation game. The lesson is followed by matching sports and activities with the appropriate age groups then in three groups each group speaks about three different activities using the correct form of do, go and play. Before the last step students in three groups take a health and fitness quiz to be answered individually then according to the final score each group choose the healthiest and fittest one in each group. Finally, each group representative discuss what can he/she do to improve his/her health and fitness?

Materials

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets SS and starts introducing the topic as following ; we know that food is important to our health in general. Today I would like to present a topic is as important as food for our health, but first let me show you some pictures related to the topic T show SS some pictures about sports and fitness activities( SS are watching the pics.) T: what are we going to talk about???? SS: Sports and Activities T: very good Teacher writes the topic title on the board

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows SS some words about sports and activities T writes on the board 2 columns one for sports and the other one for Activities, then elicits from SS what sports and what activities Sports Activities - Soccer - Youga - karate - Earobics -Swimming - Jogging T asks SS have you ever practiced one of these sports and activities S1: yes, I played soccer T: Well, Do you play it till now S1: No, when I was young T: Do you follow any of these sports S2: yes, tennis T: Good, who is your favorite tennis player S2: Andria Agassi T: now would like you to watch a video of my favorite sport song , and take notes of any new vocab to be discussed after the song SS are watching the song and take notes T discuss the new vocab with SS by contextualizing and explain the meaning of the strange or new vocabulary

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T : I hope you enjoyed the video What I need from you is to guess what are the top five sports and fitness activities in The United States? write your answer in your notebooks T distributes answer sheets among SS to check their answer. T praises SS for correct answer and their effort T: Now in pairs i would like you to make a list of your other sports and fitness activities you practice or follow and order them from the most favorite to the least one, share with your pair and then share with other pairs

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T discusses Go ,Do and play with sports and activities T: can I say I go Soccer, or can I say I do swimming, or can I say i play yoga SS; NO T: So what should we say S1: I go swimming T: very good S2: I do Yoga T: wonderful S3: I play soccer T: amazing Now let's play a collocation game T writes 3 columns on the board Go, Do, Play T:What will you do is in 3 groups during the music playing I need each group representative sticks the appropriate sports or activity card with the correct verb on the board notice if you stick the same sport twice the point will not count , and the group with the most correct answers will win the game T distributes the card sets among the groups and the game starts

Free Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T:Now in 3 groups I would like you to match each activity or sport with the appropriate age sets( Children, Teens, Young Adults, Middle-aged people and Older people) T: according to your answer group 1 will speak about the first 3 activities(aerobics, bicycling and bowling) group 2 will speak about the second 3 activities(golf, karate and swimming) group 3 will speak about the last 3 activities(tennis, volleyball and yoga)

Production (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T: in the same 3 groups I would like you to answer the questions in the health and fitness quiz individually, then compare scores among each group members and find out who is the healthiest and fittest one in each group. T distributes the quiz among all SS. SS find out the healthiest and fittest one in each group according to their scores in the quiz T asks each group winner to tell his colleagues what can people do to improve their health and fitness as he/ she is

Wrap up (1-2 minutes) • to make closure and elicit from SS what they have learned

T asks SS if there is anything they need SS summarize what they have learned in this lesson T praises his SS hopefully they enjoyed the lesson
