Description

In this lesson, students begin learning used to based on the guided discovery method which is extracted from the reading part about crazes. They will hopefully gain a better understanding of how to use the designated grammatical feature (affirmative, negative and question forms). They will be able to produce the language successfully.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Used to in the context of Crazes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a Conversation (personal life) in the context of personal life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will start reviewing and asking students about the crazes that they discussed in their previous session. Tha brief discussion will mainly revolve around the past and present fads. They will be asked three questions to find in the text.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

After finding the three highlighted sentences in the text. The students will be asked to focus on the sentences and answer 3 following questions about them. People used to go and watch some of the best pole-sitters. Before, people didn't use to have smartphones. Did people really use to buy pet rocks? The rules will be discussed by students. As far as guided discovery method is concerned (even think, pair and share), they will be given ample time to concentrate and negotiate the meaning with their peers.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After responding to the questions, the teacher himself will draw a timeline on the board and will ask some CCQs: Do people go and watch the pole-sitters now? No. Did they go in the past? Yes. Did they go once or many times? Many times. So the main components fo grammatical point (Meaning, Form, and pronunciation) will be covered thoroughly.

Controlled Practice (4-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be asked to complete a controlled practice in their book. They will be given time to think and do it in pair afterward sharing the answers with the teacher. They will be asked to come and write the responses on the board.

Free Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In order to lead the grammar lesson to a productive skill and especially speaking, there will be 12 role cards and each pupil will have it and they will be asked to read it by themselves and then everyone will be handed in a piece of paper which is FIND SOMEONE WHO.... They will move around and ask questions while using the TL.
