Subsidiary Aims

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To raise interest in the topic and set context for the lesson.

Ss will be asked a discussion question utilizing a simple collocation, such as "When you are sick and want to feel better, do you take a pill?" After WCFB, elicit the form.

Diagnostic Test (5-10 minutes) • To find out what learners know and to identify words/phrases you need to teach

Ss will work in pairs to match the listed nouns with the most appropriate verb while being monitored.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the words in terms of meaning, form, and pronunciation.

After eliciting the answers from the Ss, the cards with the nouns on it will be placed in the correct verb column on the white board. CCQs will be used to check the Ss understanding. Once the meaning is clear, the collocation will be modeled for the students and then drilled (particularly the phrases which Ss are having difficulty pronouncing). The difficult words will be written on the white board.

Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To reinforce the meaning, form and pronunciation of the items.

Ss will complete the sentences in pairs to provide practice using the collocations. Afterwards, answers will be elicited from the Ss and WCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To encourage the Ss to use the collocations in speaking fluently.

Ss will work in pairs to freely talk about the discussion questions provided on the handout. Then WCFB.
