In this lesson ss will read for skimming and scanning.They will read quickly to answer T/F questions and identify dates. The text is about Cheb Khaled.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have practised reading for gist and specific information in the context of a biography of Cheb Khaled.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context and generate interest in the text.

the teacher shows a picture of the singer Cheb Chaled and asks questions in order to let the students say what they know about him.

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To provide ss with the most potentially problematic vocabulary to make the text more accessible.

The teacher asks if the singer still known as Cheb in order to elicit "drop" The teacher asks about some of his albums to elicit "release" For the words "harmonica" and "accordion" visuals will be provided.

Title: predict what you think it is about (3-5 minutes) • To provide a lead-in directly related to the text.

The teacher shows the students just the title of the text "the king" and asks about the topic.

Scanning (10-15 minutes) • To provide a reason to read.

the teacher asks the students to read quickly and answer T/F statements. the teacher demos and the students do the same. the students compare their answers. an answer sheet is provided. then the teacher explains that the students need to read again the text quickly in order to identify the significance of some dates.

Follow up: a speaking task: discussion (10-15 minutes) • To provide a further of relating to the text, as a springboard to a speaking task.

the teacher talks about her favourite singer and gives reasons for her choice ( the voice, the lyrics, the message). the students work in pairs A thinking time will be given to the students. students talk and listen to one another if time allows the teacher asks the students about the importance of songs. ( why are songs important?)
