Description

In this lesson, students learn about functional language which is "giving advice" through guided discovery. They are supposed to practise what they have learnt in a role play to give advice to their friends.

Procedure

Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Ask for their advice on a dilemma you have (about what to do on holiday) -In pairs they come up with a solution for the teacher -Elicit the word "dilemma" Instructions and ICQs -I need your help about my holiday plans. I can go camping or I can spend some time with my family. I couldn't decide what to do. -Please talk to your partner and find a solution for me.

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language which is "giving advice" through a listening text

-They listen to the audio about Lynn's dilemma for gist and specific information -After the first listening, they answer 3 gist questions -For the second time, they are supposed to match the phrases with the correct advice -Pair check their answers -FB-Nominating Instructions and ICQs Gist -Now you will listen to a dialogue between Lynn and Carl. Lynn has to decide on something, but she needs help. -You need to answer these 3 questions while listening. Specific -You will listen to the dialogue one more time. This time you need to match the phrases in part A with the ones in part B. Are you writing anything?

Clarification (8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language through a guided discovery task- to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-they go over the exponents and answer some questions about meaning and form -they pair check their answers -FB on meaning and form very shortly -drill the exponents for giving advice function Instructions and ICQs -OK, here you have some sentences from the listening -Look at them carefully and answer these questions on your own. So, is this a pair work?

Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To check if they grasped the target language and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-They work in pairs or groups according to the number of students -Each pair gets 2 or 3 cut-ups of "advice" sentences -They put the words in the correct order and form meaningful sentences -They swap tables and check other group's sentences -They read their sentences out loud -T projects the full sentences on the board -At the end T asks them what these suggestions can be about -They talk to their partner and find a suitable context for the suggestions Instructions and ICQs -Now, I will give you some sentences which are giving advice -I cut the sentences into pieces, with your partner you need to put the sentences in the correct order. You have 3 minutes. -OK, please swap tables and look at the other group's answers (when they finish) -We have 6 pieces of advice here and they are all related to each other. -What do you think is the problem here? Why is this person giving this advice? -Talk to your partner and find a suitable situation for these suggestions.

Free Practice (18 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language for accuracy and fluency

-They work in pairs -Each member gets a role-card (A and B) -Student A has a problem, Student B tries to help him/her and give advice -When they are done, they will get new role cards -This time student B has a problem and student A tries to give advice to his/her friend -FB on the content -Error correction Instructions and ICQs -It's time to role-play everybody! -You will work in pairs. One of you will be A, the other will be B. -I will give you role cards. Student A will have a dilemma, Student B will give advice to her/his friend. -Please look at what you have on your cards and create more ideas Are you just going to read them or try to make it like a real dialogue? Student A, are you going to say "yes" to every suggestion? -Yes, you need to reject and your friend should come up with different advice
