By the end of this lesson, students will be better able to develop their reading skills in the context of talking about neighbours.

Main Aims

  • • To develop students’ skills of reading for gist and specific information in the context of neighbours.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce vocabulary items related to neighbours( long-lost- scaled a wall- drift- mow- action figures & steam engine)).

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic and activate students schemata

T puts Ss into two groups and asks the first group to think of the good features of neighbors, the group think of bad features of bad neighbors. Instructions" please group A think of good features of neighbours, group B think of bad features of neighbours" T asks Ss to share their good and bad neighbours features in pairs.

Pre-Reading (0-5 minutes) • To practise and develop students' ability to read quickly for general understanding

T asks Ss to read the text for two minutes and select the best title from choices provided by the T. Instruction: “Read the text for two minutes then choose the best title " Ss read the text and discuss with each other. T monitors. T conducts feedback

Reading for specific information (10 minutes) • For students to practice and get better at scanning to quickly pick out pieces of specific information.

T puts Ss into pairs and asks them to read the five stories from the public again and decide which are good neighbors and which are bad neighbors and which could be more than one? Instructions " find your number partner sit together and read the five stories again and decide which are the good one and which are bad ones and which could be more than one? CCQs: You will read about how many stories? Are there more than one possible answer? T monitors. T conducts feedback if needed.

While-Reading/ #2 Detailed comprehension task (10 minutes) • For students to develop their ability to read more intensively and gain a deeper understanding of the text.

T asks Ss to find words that have the similar meaning to given phrases. Instructions " find words in the text that have the same meaning of the following phrase:" T sets the task. Ss complete individually - T monitors Pair check - T monitors Feedback

Productive follow-up task (8-15 minutes) • For Ss to have the opportunity to react to the content of the text. To develop spoken fluency on the topic.

T writes " What is your worst experience with neighbors?" on board T asks Ss to work in pairs and tell their experience to partner. T monitors T conducts Feedback.
