Description

In this lesson, learners will read a text about shops in different countries. This is the first lesson, the learners will continue with language lessons in the same context.

Materials

Abc Textbook, Cutting Edge Elementary Student's Book, Page 83 ex.1-3

Main Aims

  • Reading - By the end of the lesson students will have practiced their reading skills such as reading for gist and reading for detail by reading texts about buying and selling.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking - By the end of the lesson, the learners will have practiced speaking about shops mentioned in the texts and discuss their favourite shops.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and let students have a main idea about the context

Teacher greets the students and shortly talks about shopping to set the context.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To engage students to the context

After the teacher talks about shop she went to, she asks them pre-reading questions. What is the biggest / smallest / favourite shop? (why favourite?) Since these questions are related to reading texts, sts. will be familiar with what they will read about.

While-Reading #1 (subskill: skimming) (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Students will be asked to read the text about shops that people quickly to decide which shop is more interesting to them. When they finish reading, teacher asks them to discuss in pairs and compare answers. WGFB to elicits answers from the learners. (CCQ: Is an interesting place funny or boring?) (ICQ: Do we read every detail or read quickly?)

While-Reading #2 (subskill: scanning) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students will be asked to read the text in detail to decide if the statements are true or false. After answering the questions the sts. will be asked to compare their answers in pairs. WGFB, teacher elicits answers from the sts. and writes on the board the everybody can see and check their answers.

Post-Reading (Productive follow-up) (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher pairs the sts. with different partners. She gives them at least two questions to discuss depending on the time left. (Which shop would you like to visit from the text? / Where do you usually go for shopping? Why?) Students will be expected to discuss with their partners. WGFB - eliciting answers after each question.
