In this lesson Ss will learn vocabulary- phrasal verbs with "live"- in the context of various life situations such as travel, money, retirement, work.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of phrasal verbs with "live" in the context of various life situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency in a discussion of life situations as well as through a questionnaire.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show picture of various life situations (life cycle from baby to old age, moving homes, getting married, losing your job, going off to university/graduating...) which will remind Ss of the various life experiences. Ask Ss: (chose one or two) * What do you see here? * Are they happy in all the pictures/stages? * What stages of life are there? When is the biggest change? Which is the happiest stage? * Are you happy in your lives?Is your life boring? Busy? Fun? (other ideas: * Imagine that your life so far divides up into a number of "stages" or "periods". How many are there? What name would you give to each stage? *What are the times when people's lives change in important ways (eg getting married)? * What do you think is the biggest change in a human's life: your first girlfriend/boyfriend? Losing your job? Getting married? Getting divorced? Having a baby? Retiring? Something else?) Q: Anyone following the TL over the weekend? What happened to TL over the weekend? We "lived through" a market crash: TL lost 20% of its value against major currencies over the weekend. But we are still here? So, it is about life. Let's see if you know any phrases with "life".

Test #1 pg 66 (6-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

S INSTRUCTION: Fill in the gaps with these words. HO exercise. Pair check. Monitor. FB- through recording. Do a follow up FB on WB if many mistakes.

Teach (13-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Determine what Ss are weak in. Go over Lexis Analysis Sheet for clarification. Error correction. PUT phrasal verb clips on one side of the board. PUT the noun clips on the other side of the wall. Ss to find the right noun clips to go with the verb. INSTRUCTION: What goes with....(phrasal verb)? Elicit Form: (phrasal verb+ noun) Model and drill.

Tests #2, #3 or #4, to be used according to Ss need (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

TEACHER: Choose appropriate test from below, depending on what Ss need more: If there is a need to know for all phrases: S INSTRUCTION: (Test #2) Complete the sentences with the correct "live+___" phrase. Match the sentence with the phrase. HO test. Monitor. Peer Check FB- WCFB on board. If there is need for "live for/live off": S INSTRUCTION: (Test #3) Find if there is a mistake. If there is, correct it. HO Monitor FB- Peer check WCFB- write answers on board If there is need for "live through/out of/for/on/up to": S INSTRUCTION: (Test #4) Fill in the blanks with words from the box. ICQ: Can you use other words? No. HO Monitor FB- Peer check WCFB- write answers on board Go over LA Sheet where necessary.

Free practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Put the phrases on WB. Ask Ss to use these when discussing. WC INSTRUCTION: Go around the class and talk to your friends. Find someone who lives for love. Ask: Do you live for love or for money? Why? Write your friends's name and make short notes for explanation. HO survey Monitor. FB- ask Ss: How many people did you find who live for love? Error correction IF TIME ACTIVITIES: WC INSTRUCTION: Go around the class and talk to your friends. Find someone who could live on 20 TL a day. Write down his/her name. Ask him/her how? Write down short notes under extra info. HO- survey sheet Monitor. FB- Ask Ss: Did you find anyone who could? How is she/he doing it? Error Correction. PW INSTRUCTION: Get in Pairs. Discuss with your partner: Whose expectations do you (don't you) live up to? How? Monitor FB- Ask Ss about his/her partners: who has 4 similar answers? 3? 2? Error correction. Switch pairs and repeat. WC INSTRUCTION: Go around the class and talk to your friends. What difficult times did they live through? What did they do, how did they manage? Write down short notes under extra info. HO- survey sheet Monitor. FB- Ask Ss: Sid you find anyone with similar experiences? Did they cope in a similar way? Error Correction.
