Description

In this lesson Ss learn and practise business vocabulary such as compete (for), get fired, talent, etc. in the context of the BBC programme "The Apprentice". First Ss watch a short clip of the programme and discuss about it. Then they read a review to see the related vocabulary in context. Before the reading related vocabulary is elicited from Ss. As a practice, Ss do a gapfill exercise. Finally, they discuss their opinions about the programme.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about The Apprentice in the context of business

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Greet Ss and ask them what they remember about the previous lesson. -Show the video and tell them to watch and answer the discussion questions. -They check their answers in pairs. -Elicit answers. W/C F/B

Pre-Reading (ECDW) (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teach Ss "contestant, compete for, apprentice, task, talent, treat, get fired" by using ECDW (check your handout).

While-Reading #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1)Ask Ss to look at the title and the pictures and try to decide what the text is about. Tell them to discuss their ideas in pairs. Check answers and write the ideas on the board. 2) Tell Ss to read the text for gist and check their predictions on the board (3-4 min). Elicit the answers in F/B.

While-Reading #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1)Tell Ss to cover the T/F questions alone. Ask them to check in pairs. Tell them to unfold the paper for the answer key.

Post-Reading (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1) Give Ss the gapfill handout. Ss work alone and fill in the gaps with the words from the box. Ask Ss check their answers in pairs. Monitor and F/B. Give the answer key. 2) Divide Ss into groups of 3-4. Give the discussion questions ex. 1.c. Monitor Ss when they are talking. Make notes on good sentences/ideas/correct phrases and also incorrect sentences/phrases. As they finish, elicit answers by nominating Ss and then write the sentences you've noted on the board. Explain why they are good / correct the wrong ones.
