Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening and listening for specific info practice using a text about Getting Away on Holiday in the context of Reporter's Interview at Heathrow with 6 passengers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of travel destinations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show picture of a plane, passengers , and holiday destinations. Ask Ss: What are these people doing? Why do we go on holiday? What do you look most forward to when you go on holiday? Well, a reporter asked 6 passengers at London's Heathrow Airport this question, and these were the answers (point to activities on the situation sheet). INSTRUCTION: (ex.1) Can you guess which ones were mentioned by men and which ones by women? Put an M for man and W for women next to each activity. ICQ: Where are we writing our answers? Which box? What are we writing ? (M/W) HO situation sheet Pair check your answers.

Listening for Gist (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

INSTRUCTION: Listen to the interviews to check your answers. There are 3 questions in the middle of the sheet: Answer those questions for each passenger (show where). ICQ: how many tasks do we have? 2: 1.checking M/W and 2.writing answers for each speaker. How many for each speaker: 3 ( Where are they going; How long are they staying; What are they going to do.) Listen carefully. Play recordings 1.40-1.45 (recordings take 7 minutes) Monitor while Ss working. Pair check. FB - ask if what they guessed was correct. any surprising answers? FB- go over a few of the short answers if difficulty. Choose strong S to answer.

Listening Skills for Specific Information (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

INSTRUCTION: Listen again. Complete the sentences with the correct passenger number. (1-6) You are working on your own. ICQ: Is this group work? HO Exercise 3. Play recordings 1.40-1.45 Check answers in pairs. Monitor. WC feedback.

Production: practicing speaking skills (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

INSTRUCTION: Get in Pairs. Discuss with your partner: What do you most look forward to when you go on holiday? Which activities; what to eat there, what to see... Monitor FB- did anything different or interesting come up. Error correction. IF TIME, activity: Switch pairs and repeat.
