Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have learnt how to compare things in the context of advertising

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for comparisons in the context of advertising


Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the learners what they compare in a day. ex. the quality of the clothes, prices on the menu, electronic devices... Talk to your partner and do a list. Whole class feedback.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through sentences

Stick the titles (same or almost the same- different) on the board. Stick the comparison sentences disorderly on the board. Ask the students to stand up and put the right sentences under the correct title.

Clarification (12-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask students CCQs. The interest rates with the new Spark Gold card are as high as most other cards. (is the interest lower or the same) the same. New Spark Gold card's design is the same as my own card. The Platinum Card is not as good as the Gold Card.(Is the Gold card worse or better?) better Gold Spark card is as useful as the new Platinum card. This salesperson is different from the other salespeople. His name is similar to the singer’s name. What are the items to compare if the are the same or almost the same, after eliciting write on the board. Ask them to check the same sentences. Ask CCQ. Do we put here a verb or an adjective? adj Can we change the adjective? Yes. For example? Get other possible adjectives from the learners. Write 'the same as', 'similar to', as....adj... as" under the 'same' title Write 'different from' and 'not as...adj... as" under the 'different' title Drill pronunciation, weak and the strong forms.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss Book, pg 48, ex 1 Give students the paragraph which has six mistakes in it. Allow them to study on it for 2 min. Peer check WC Feedback or give the answer key to check their answers. Ss Book, pg 48, ex 2 Students are going to rewrite the sentences in 5 min. using the prompts so that they have the same meaning. Peer check WC Feedback Error correction

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss book, pg 49, ex. 3 Work in pairs Write four slogans similar to the ones in exercise 2. (Depending on the time: choose one product or do all of them) Present it to the other group Free time activity: Compare two cities. Stand up and talk to your friends about those cities Error correction
