Description

This is a stand-alone lesson from a different source, but it links with the context in the previous lessons. The discussion of ideas should also gives the students the opportunity to use some of the TL from the previous lesson in comparing the options and choosing the best.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in functional language (discussing ideas, making suggestions and reaching decisions)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening on discussions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Stick magazine covers on the board and tell the students to write the types of magazines 2- Nominates students to write the answers on the board and let them check. 3- Feedback

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

1- Write the questions on the board and tell the Ss to listen to the recording for the answers. 2- Ask the students to peer-check and give feedback.

Language Focus/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1- Stick the printouts, "give opinions" "make suggestions" "agree" "disagree" on the board. Show the materials, give instructions and give out printouts. 2- Play the track again for a detailed listening and ask the students to match and stick the printouts on the board. 2- Check the answers and give feedback 3- Drill.

Productive Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills To give students practice in speaking for fluency.

1- Tell the students that they are in focus groups to design a new community lifestyle magazine 2- Put the students into groups of six or five (depending on the number of Ss) Choose a secretary and a chairperson. 3- Give out the photocopies 4- Ask the chairpersons to begin asking the groups for their ideas. Secretaries write down the ideas. 5- Monitor, check if the Ss follow the procedure 6- Ask the secretaries to explain the five ideas to the class.

Follow-up Task ( Depending on remaining time) (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1- Tell the students to design the cover of their magazine with headlines, sub headlines and captions. They can include photographs and drawings 2- Put the covers on the wall for comparison.
