This is a reading lesson with the sub aim of speaking. Ss will read an article and complete controlled and free tasks.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific info reading practices using a text about healthy diets in the context of food.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking for fluency practice in the context of a healthy diet.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

WC Introduce, if new students. Put up picture with breakfast items. Elicit from Ss what they had for breakfast. "I usually have some bread, coffee and fruit." PW/GW INSTRUCTION: Get in pairs. Discuss what you usually have for breakfast. For lunch? For dinner? FB- any "same" food that all Ss usually have. Show pictures to groups/pairs. What are these people doing? Are they alone or with other people, may be friends/family? Are they eating a lot of food or just a little? What do you see on the plates? PW INSTRUCTION: Look at the pictures and discuss the questions. HO questions.

Gist Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

S INSTRUCTION: Read the text on your own. Check if your ideas were correct. You have 3 minutes. Do not unfold (open) the top of text. HO text (with title folded.) Monitor. Pair check. FB S INSTRUCTION: Choose a suitable title for the text. HO options A,B,C. Monitor Pair check. FB

Specific Info Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging specific info reading task

S INSTRUCTION: Read the article again. Match statements 1-8 with diets A, B, C. HO strips with with statements. Monitor. Pair Check. FB-write answers on board; ask Ss where the correct info in the text is. S INSTRUCTION: Write if the statement is True or False. HO statements. Monitor. Pair check. FB Whole Class.

Post-Reading Productive Follow Up Task (9-11 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

PW INSTRUCTION: Discuss (talk) with your partner. HO the two questions. Switch partners and talk. Monitor. FB. Additional discussion questions: "would you like to try any of the diets in the article?"

IF TIME free practice. Sub-aim skill practice. (0-0 minutes) • Ss to practice fluency in speaking in main healthy eating

Ss to read and discuss menus with the aim of picking the restaurant for a night out. Ss in 2 groups. HO menus. GW INSTRUCTION: You are going for dinner with your friends. You all want to eat healthy. Which menu do you pick? Why? Discuss. Monitor. FB.
