Description

Grammar Lesson -- Simple Present

Materials

Abc flashcards / OHB / Realia/ ball / handouts and answer key

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practiced the simple present using some, any, this, that in the context of describing rooms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise listening for gist and revise there is/are and prepositions of place.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1/Start with a photo of Yasmine's Kitchen (my baby daughter). Include realia (cooker / cup / saucer / spoon / forkā€¦). Ask students questions such as: *Is there a cooker? Yes, there is. Where is it? It's next Is it under the table? (If necessary) 2/Display the items from ex1 pg 38 and students can ask me questions. Tell students that now it's their turn to ask me questions.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Task ex2 page 38: demonstrate the listening task to help students notice the target language in context. After asking me questions about Suzie's kitchen, I will tell students that they are going to listen to a conversation between Suzie and Matt. Feedback: Answer Key

Highlighting and Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Grammar Spot: 1/ Focus on tasks 1 and 2 Students work in groups and are given 1 min to think about the difference between some and any task 1 and 8 / Give examples from the listening to check meaning with them. Use CCQs to elicit meaning / use flashcards for some and any * do we use to talk about 1 thing? * Do we use it with the negative form? 2/ Focus on task 3: That/This/these/those Explain through body language and realia: this is a door / move away / that's a door after these 2 example introduce these/those explain the difference (singular and plurals) place the words under flashcards/ 2 columns ( singular and plural) ask students to complete activity 3 in grammar spot

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ex 1 page 39 demonstrate then allow students to continue in pairs .Answer Key Feedback displayed and check any mistakes.

Semi-controlled Practice 1 and 2 (18-20 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for free practice

Semi controlled practice 1: EX 2 page 39 -- ICQ and dont forget to demonstrate the exercice for example: T-s: There is a blue blue./ There are papers. S-S: practice the activity by throwing the ball from one student to another CP: students talk together to find other things in the Classroom EX 3 page 39 -- explain the difference between this and these / that and those Provide students with picture * T-S: read the examples and point to things or hold things * S-S: make sure students use all the determiners / again students throw the ball between each other. * closed pairs Semi-controlled practice 2: Set the context: Tell students that now we are going to do a listening about Yushi Ishigawa Ex4 page 39 read the instruction / explain / Check the instruction. after doing the listening students talk about what Yoshi has in his bag. SS pass the ball from between each other to check their answers T displays the answers on the White Active board Is there a newspaper? Are there pens Ex 5 Page 39Then students discuss together what they have in their bags using the following: Is there a dictionary in your bag? Are there stamps in you bag ? How many are there? now personalize task by asking students to ask each other questions about what they have in their bags (girls) / pockets (men) using the same questions.
