Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of vacation
  • To provide clarification and practice of the present continuous in the context of vacation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be given a picture of some people on vacation. The teacher puts the students in pairs and asks them to discuss the picture with their partners. Then the teacher will ask some questions about the picture to set the context and to prepare the students for the theme and structure. The students will answer the questions chorally or individually.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The students will be given a page containing three short texts which are phone messages in the context of vacation. The teacher will give them two minutes to skim through the texts and answer one general question about the weather in each place to have the students read for the gist. This will be followed by a whole class feedback. Then the teacher will ask the students to read the texts for the second time, this time more intensively, and answer some gap-fill questions. This is done individually followed by pair check. Whole class feedback will be given afterwards.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will highlight some sentences from the texts and asks the students about the structure used in each of them, followed by some concept questions to draw their attention to the target structure.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Since some sentences were chosen and put on the board, the teacher will clarify the form, meaning, and pronunciation of affirmative, negative, and question forms of the structure with the help of the students. More examples will be given if the teacher finds the structure problematic for some students. Then, a handout will be given to the students as a reference, containing the above mentioned forms.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be given a handout containing gap-fill questions and they are asked to answer them individually, followed by pair check and whole class feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The teacher will divide the class into two groups. Each group will choose a representative. All the members in groups are going to be representatives in turns. One sentence with the target structure will be given to each representative to mime, his/her group members are to come up with the exact complete sentence in order to get points.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will be given a handout, containing a set of question describing a perfect day. The teacher will model a sample with the help of students. Then, the students will have time to come up with their own personal ideas. This will be followed by pairwork and if time allows, they will share their ideas with the whole class.
