Reading Lesson- Halloween (Demo)
Intermediate Level, Grade 4 level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn more vocabulary words used in the reading text about Halloween. The lesson starts with a minimal discussion about Halloween festivities in Egypt vs. abroad. This is followed by a controlled practice exercise through true or false questions then, peer correction and finally free practice via designing and presenting a Halloween invitation card to the neighboring class.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and scan practice using a text about Halloween

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a speaking about previous Haloween costumes and forms of festivities.
  • To provide product in writing invitation card to the neighboring class

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use the powerpoint slide with variety of theme picture about Halloween to draw student's attention . - Ask Ss some questions if they ever celebrated Halloween. If yes, - what did they dress like? - what was their favorite costume ? - why do people wear costumes ? - What do people usually eat or give away during Halloween ? - Do we celebrate Halloween in the Egyptian culture ? - Where is mostly celebrated in Egypt ? and Why ?

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-0 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Give out the Halloween article, let Ss read it quickly individually, then ask them for gist questions that would be written on the board: ex: Read the article and choose which title could fit the best : a) Halloween Celebrations in the past b) The day of the dead c) Halloween’s Basics - Ss check answers together, and then the whole class feedback - Peer correction, if necessary

While-Reading/ controlled practice #1 (5-0 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Ss will be divided in pairs, Ss are given instructions on solving the true or false handout - Ss will be asked to check answers together -T feedback

While-Reading/ Semi-Controlled #2 (5-0 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Set Ss in two large groups, ask them to answer the questions in the handout - Peer correction, T feed back

Post-Reading/Free Practice (5-0 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- In Large groups, Ss will use the large A3 paper, colors, scissors and design their very own Halloween invitation card to the neighboring class. - Ss will be asked to use any 5 words from the article in complete sentences. - Each group will present their card to the class - Whole class feedback - Announce the winner and give prizes
