Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Buenos Aires in the context of travel, holiday.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Holiday, cities


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- After greeting the students, I will project an image of Avenue 9th July. I will ask some questions about Argentina such as; 'Where is Argentina located?', 'What do you know about this country?' 'Do you know some famous people from Argentina?'

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-listening part starts with a pile of photographs about Buenos Aires and Argentina. I will hand in these photos as HO. They will try to get the idea about Argentina roughly by answering one or two questions. 'What can you see/do in Buenos Aires?' and 'What sports are popular in Argentina?'. Pair-work required. - Then, I will give the second HO which includes small reading text. They will read it individually and check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Pre-reading part have three exercises. Exercise 2A is about watching a video about Buenos Aires. Listening for gist is the core of this exercise. While watching, SS have to put the photographs in the order on the first HO I gave. Solo work. They have check the answers with partners. PW ICQ: Are you going to write the numbers on photos? (YES) - In exercise 2B, SS will have match the word with the descriptions. Second HO will be given. It is a PW. Answers will be checked in pairs as well.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- SS will watch the video again. It will be a listening for detail activity. I will give the third HO to SS. They have to fill in the blanks from the listening part. Normally, SS fill the gaps from a box in which they can find the words but top of the HO will be folded and SS are not allowed to see the words. Solo work. They will check the answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Productive skill is speaking in this part. I want them to choose a part/district of Istanbul or another city they know well. Before speaking, 1-2 minute(s) and then; I want SS to bring their chairs in front of the board facing one another and scramble the pairs. At that time, they will have the HO 4 to utilise from some expressions to get an idea for speaking. (Key phrases HO) E.g., Bursa is a famous with... You can (eat) the best 'Kumru's in Izmir. Anıtkabir is the landmark of (Ankara). You can (visit) there. There are (expensive) but beautiful shops in Nişantaşı. Piyaz is a typical food from Antalya. You must (try) it.
