Main Aims

  • To provide review of things to buy in the context of shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- I will project a short video of Grand Bazaar to prepare the subject. - I will address some questions to students to get answers explicitly about shopping. E.g., Do you know how many shops there are inside? (Grand Bazaar) Do you go shopping everyday? Do you like shopping? What is the last thing you bought? P.S: Lead-in must not exceed 3-4 minutes.

Clarification (8-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will start to clarify the meanings of shopping places such as 'greengrocerer's', dry-cleaner's, 'pharmacy/chemist's', 'clothes shop', 'butcher's', 'electronic shops', 'baker's', 'bookshop', 'sports shop', 'newsagent's', 'supermarket' on the board. Pronunciation of these words will be introduced starting with the hardest ones such as newsagent's, pharmacy's, clothes shop, greengrocerer's etc. - Clarification will mostly be done by students. I will elicit the meanings by presenting simple relevant words to them. E.g., where you can buy lots of vegetables and fruits. After clarification, I will want them to think about different shops that are not included in the SS' book. E.g., music store, painting studio, typographer, stationery store... (PW)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Regrouping the class. Some of the SS will change places with others. - Controlled practise will start with pictures from different shops. I will give page 156. as handout in color printing and they will find out which shop name matches with which picture. They will do this in pairs. After finishing, they will check the results with other pairs. ICQ: Will you match the pictures with shop names? (YES) - I will give the second and third (if time allows for the third one) handouts. They will do the both exercises individually. Peer-check after they are done. WGFB or solid answer key may be introduced. - I will give them little pieces of papers including some shopping items and shopping lists. One group will be customers with shopping lists in their hands. Other group will be acting like sellers. One group will come up to the sellers' table and will want to buy each items in the shopping list by collecting them in their hands.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- Exercise 2A will be given to SS. They have to match some items with the table below. I encourage them to produce some interesting items (flower store, gun shop etc.). - They have to do this 2A exercise in group of 3 max. I want them to use the words they have learned while discussing to find sth. interesting. (3-4 min.) They will listen to a small listening part exercise 4.9. After listening, they will repeat it. ICQ: Are you going to listen and check your answers? (YES)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will split the class into two groups: Group A and Group B. I will project a Word file on the board. Each group will think about the best shopping places, what to buy, - SS will have 2 minutes to think about. Each group will think about best shopping options in those regions according to their preferences and what to expect to discover different kinds of shops or malls. - They will discuss and decide as a whole group and explain to each other positive and negative sides.
