A2 (Elementary) level

Description

In this lesson Ss will learn vocabulary relating to adjectives - describing people. They will learn opposites, grammar and position of adjectives.

Materials

Abc WB
Abc CD ex 2

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give Ss vocabulary for adjectives in the context of appearances and Tour groups

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss semi-controlled speaking and listening practice for adjectives

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* Display 2 photo's on the WB - one of me and one of Recep Ivedik. Ss are to describe the photo's to me. I am interested to know how many descriptive words they know at this stage. * Using the words they give me I will say these are adjectives and I will write this word on the board with a few examples (tall, young & beautiful). Explain adjectives are used to describe things/people.

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

* Show HO 1 - match the adjectives in the box to the pictures in pairs * Give Ss the hand-out

While-Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

* Ss listen to the recording and check their answers * get FB on their answers * Make sure Ss understand 'opposites' by writing some adjectives on the board and Ss to tell me the opposite (eg tall/short, old/young)

Controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check

* Show HO 2 - match the adjectives to the correct category. Pairwork. * Ss check answers on the answer keys around the room * Check understanding of the vocab using CCQ's: - middle-aged - is it young? No - is it old? No - is it in the middle of young and old? yes - medium height - is it short? No - is it tall? No - Is it in the middle? yes - average-looking - is it beautiful? no - is it ugly? no - is it in the middle? yes

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

* write 'He's a handsome man' on the WB, ask the form from Ss - subject + adjective + noun * Ask Ss where do adjectives go? (before the noun) * Drill the sentence * write 'They are youngs children' on the WB - ask Ss what is wrong (the s on the end of young). Explain adjectives don't have a plural form * Drill the correct sentence

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to practice the target language

* Split Ss into 2 or 4 groups (depending on numbers). Show HO3 - famous people. Instruct each group to work together to write a name for each category * FB - elicit some examples * In the same groups one person from one group says a name eg Brad Pitt, the other group say the category - Is he a handsome film star?' the first group replies yes he is. * change group roles

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare Ss for the text

* Show HO 4 - the picture of Valerie & Brian who work for Explore London Tours. * In pairs describe Valerie & Brian using adjectives, give HO4 * FB - elicit lots of adjectives and phrases from Ss - Valerie - she's young, she's pretty, she has fair/short hair - Brian - He's middle-aged, He's fat, he has short/dark hair

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

* Write on WB 1) Where is Brian? & 2) What does Valerie talk to Brian about? * Ss listen and think about the answers * FB - elicit the answers 1) At the airport 2) Brian will meet people and Valerie describes them * Show HO 5 - match the people to the pictures. Give HO5 * Play the recording again * FB - which picture is Delilah Williams ? (A), Patti Owen (B) & Dave Matthews (D)
