Description

In this lesson Ss will find out the meaning and form by guided discovery based in the context of call the doctor. They will listen to a dialogue between a doctor and a patient, and they will fill in the gaps in the present perfect simple or present continuous forms. Furthermore, they will have 2 HOs based on grammar practices.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of present perfect simple and present continuous in the context of call the doctor.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about conversation between a doctor and a patient in the context of call the doctor.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show images of doctor, patient, hospital, waiting room, and nurse that has a connection with the context of call the doctor. Ss will predict and T will elicit the words, such as; clock, doctor, patient, waiting room, hospital and nurse. T will tell Ss to speak and practice for 2 minutes by using these model dialogue sentences: student A: Have you ever been to a doctor? student B: Yes, I have / No, I haven't. Student A: I've been waiting for the doctor since 1 hour! Student B: He has been waiting since 2 hours!

Listening task (8-10 minutes) • To introduce the target language via a listening

T will give Ss HO1 to listen and fulfill the gaps. Ss complete solo Ss do peer check.

Highlighting target language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight the target language by use of a guiding discovery task.

T gives the script to Ss; that consists of underlined sentences. T does ICQs: are you going to alone? (Yes), Are you going to read every single word in the script? (No), Are you going to concentrate on the tenses? (Yes) Ss read it for specific information solo. T does CCQs for Present Perfect Simple: Are they talking about the future? (No) Is the doctor asking about the past? (Yes), Is the doctor asking about a specific time? (No), Did he take his temperature at the doctor? (No) Did he do a blood test in the past? (Yes). T does CCQs for Present Perfect Continuous: Was Mr.Blaine feeling bad? (Yes) Did Mr.Blaine take a pill at the doctor? (No), Did he take a pill in the past? (Yes), Will Mr.Blaine's headache stop? (Possibly - but we don't know)

Claryfing target language (16-17 minutes) • To clarify meaning and form of the target language

T gives HO3 and tells Ss to do ex.1, which consists of putting the underlined sentences to the correct tense column. T tells Ss to do ex. 2, which consists of matching the sentences to the correct timeline. T tells Ss to do ex. 3, which consists of filing in the blanks of the present perfect simple and present perfect continuous forms. T does ICQs: Are you doing alone? (Yes), Are you going to read everything in the script? (No), Which tenses will you concentrate on? (Present perfect simple and present perfect continuous) Ss complete Solo T nominates Ss to write answers on board. T gives HO5 to Ss to do ex.1 and circle the correct form the verb. Ss do Solo T nominates Ss to write answers on the board. T gives HO6 to Ss to do ex. 2 and complete the sentence with the best form of the verb. Ss do Solo Ss check in pairs T nominates Ss to write answers on the board.

Language practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide controlled and freer practice

T shows the questions on the white board and tells Ss to talk with their pairs about; How many colds have you had in the last three months? Are you taking any vitamins or supplements at the moment? How long have you been taking them? Do you drink much water? How many glasses have you drunk today? Do you do any exercise? What do you do? How long have you been doing it (playing tennis, going to a gym, etc.)? Do you eat a lot of fruit and vegetables? How many portions have you had today? Do you walk to work? How far is you work? How many hours do you sleep a night? Have you been sleeping well recently? Are you allergic to anything? Have you ever has a serious allergic reaction? T gives model sentences: Yes, I'm allergic to goji berries. I had been thru a serious allergic, 4 years ago.reaction. Ss speak with their pairs.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on use of target language - dealing with errors and problems.

T monitors Ss T write errors on board and tells Ss to correct it. T praises the Ss who did good language.
