In this lesson, students read about three festivals Tomatina Festival in Spain, Carnevale d` Ivrea in Italy and Water Festival in Songkran in Thailand

Materials

Abc The Set Book - Handouts designed by the teacher- a video on a national local festival

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to express time: how to say what the date is and how to use common prepositions of time correctly

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product and process writing practice of a A short paragraph on the passage using a table in the context of Three World Festivals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To make Ss get involved ask them why does a student throw his watch out of the school window. { throw is one of the blocking words- Answer: To see the time flying} Then, ask what the date is today. { 8th July 2018 or 8 July 2018 }

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give Ss a worksheet to guess the blocking words: festival, celebrate and throw. They read and fill in the space. they can supplied with some extracts from the dictionaries or T can monitor these entries. This is a solo exercise.

While Reading/ Listening ( 7-10 minutes) (5-7 minutes) • To give ss a reason to read at a general level

Give Ss time to scan and do exercise (a). Focus on the pictures. Ask Ss to match the photos with the three paragraphs in case of the printable sheet is not clear, monitor the pictures. Check orally. This exercise is applied solo

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

ive Ss time to scan and do exercise (b). Focus on the pictures. Ask Ss where and when are the festivals and what people do in the three pictures. in case of the printable sheet is not clear, monitor the pictures. Check orally. This exercise is applied in close pairs Then do exercise C and ask what festival would you like to go. Ss may give reasons for their choice. This is a centered student feedback to the class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Write on the board : If you go , don`t wear new clothes. Is this true or false and why? You can see some people wear red hats. Why? Find a word ih the third paragraph that means to continue

Follow Up (10-12 minutes) • To give Ss the chance to respond to the text and to balance productive and receptive skills

Fill in the table then write sentences . SS read and fill in the table about the three festivals then they write a short paragraph about them, When you give the feedback. Refer to the term of the topic sentence. This activity is applied in groups of four students. Each student must write a sentence. Others must agree with him or not. They can discuss or correct mistakes. Check on board.

Differentiating Learning in case of having time (5-10 minutes) • To give the class remedial and enrichment work

Set a Learning Clinic Area Teach Forming sentences with the below level students. Ask the On Level Student to write about one of their local festival e.g. Sham Al Naseem
