Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of quantifiers through listening tasks.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise controlled speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the students a bag containing many items such as toothpaste, rice, soap, ... Ask the students about each item: Is this countable or uncountable ? If it is uncountable, ask students: How can we make it countable ?

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Students listen to a recording and fill in the gaps. After that, they check in pairs. Stick answer keys on the wall so that students stand up and correct their mistakes. Students do the analysis task in pairs. Provide the answer key on the board. Ask CCQs and drill some words if necessary. Examples: Several: Is it a big or small number ? Is it more than two ? How do we pronounce it ? A bit of: Is it a big part or a small part ?

Controlled practice (7-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Students work in pairs and decide which quantifier best completes the sentences about the British Council.

Freer practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students work in small groups to discuss about the place they live in using appropriate quantifiers.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students read the sentences priviously written on the white board and decide if they are correct; if they aren't, they need to say why and correct them.
