Description

In this lesson, Ss learn selected vocabulary items. They start by discussing the picture, guessing the title completion, and then, scanning to pick specific information. After that, they do reading for detailed comprehension. The controlled practice will be (speaking ) expressing out opinions while the freeer practice (also speaking) will be a simulation activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about child taking risks in the context of health and well-being

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide learners with useful vocabulary items.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will learn the selected vocabulary items. Then, they will comment upon the text's photograph. Teacher will elicit from the Ss suggestions to complete the article title.

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Ss will discuss, in pairs, the set (4) of questions. - They will scan individually the handed out articles to pick the specific information. - Ss discuss their questions, in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss will read for details to identify the two controversial points of view around the article issue.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Ss will be provided with a two-column table to be filled in with the controversial justifications. - Ss will fill in individually. Then, they will check answers with the whole group. - Ss will all gather to check their classifications

Post-Reading/Listening (14-18 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Controlled Practice: Ss will take turns to tell whether they are for or against the article issue. Freer Practice: Ss will split themselves into for and against groups to surf the net and pick statistics, anecdotes or scientific facts that can support their points of view. The group's sposkesman will simulate the roles of Mark Tremblay and a well-educated mother to enact a debate in the context of a television debate.(The group members may assist with guiding cues)
