Flashbulb Memories

Description

In this lesson, the students learn about the Flashbulb Memories in some foreign countries through listening. First, they discuss about the countries and do a matching activity. Then they learn the new vocabulary relevant to the theme. After answering the questions of the video which they watch about flashbulb memories, they end the lesson by doing a speaking activity on the same topic.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To greet the students and get them to be involved in the lesson.

-The teacher will show a photo of one of her flashbulb memories. -The students will talk about a flashbulb memory in their lives. -Handing out the page about flashbulb memories in foreign countries. -Students will match the events to the photos.

Matching Vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To provide new vocabulary within the context of memories of important events

- Matching the words with the definitions. Peer check, then whole group check. - Asking some CCQ to be sure if the students have understood the new words. Who is a famous psychologist? Is getting a proposal or going to school a striking event? Is amygdala a part of our heart or brain? Is brown or red a vivid color? Do both good and bad events lay down memories? How? Think of Baris Manco. Is his long hair,rings and big moustache idiosyncratic to him?

Listening for gist (5-8 minutes) • To watch the video for listening and ticking practice.

-Letting the students watch the video once to find the mentioned memories in activity 1a. -ICQ Are you going to write or just tick? Where are the answers? -Peer check

Listening for detail (8-10 minutes) • To be able to answer the questions

-Students are allowed to read the questions for a minute. -Watching the video and trying to answer the questions at the same time. -They can watch one more time after teacher`s monitoring if necessary. -Answer key is on the board for the students.

Focus on speaking about memories (10-15 minutes) • To be able to tell about an event in their country

-Students are directed to excercise 5a -Thinking about a flashbulb memory in their or another country (they can also search online) -They take notes to share with their peers later
