Description

In this lesson, Ss will be engaged in receptive skill development by listening for gist and details related to a conversation between a grandfather and his grandson on birthday memories of the grandpa, and then Ss will focus on grammar for past simple 'be' questions and short answers with controlled practice. After aims are completed Ss will work on productive skill development by speaking with freer practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past simple 'be' questions and short answers in the context of birthday memory

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of memories
  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about memories of a grandfather in the context of bithday

Procedure

Stage 1 (ice-breaker) (2-3 minutes) • to learn the names of the Ss and make a revision for spelling

-Spell your name with a word after every initials but do not write it on the board. Let them to guess your name. -Give the pieces of paper to the Ss and make them to code their names with a word. -Exchange the papers with their partner and ask them to say the his/her partners name. -Place the pieces in front of them to use during the activities.

Stage 2 (lead-in) (2-3 minutes) • to introduce the lesson and set a context for the lesson

-Show the pictures on the presentation. -Make a few sentences about each picture with past simple 'be'. -Ask Ss a couple of questions with past simple 'be' -Elicit anwers from the Ss.

Stage 3 (listenning) (12-15 minutes) • To develop their receptive skill by listening

-Draw 2 stickmen on the WB and explain the grandson,Jason, is asking question to his grandfather. -Let them read 5 a.(highlighted with yellow) and ask what's the grandfather's name? -Play the track 2 once. -Let them read the questions in 5b. -Play the track again, -FB -Write was/were on the board. -Use your voice (weak/strong) to focus on pronunciation.

Stage 4 (grammar) (15-17 minutes) • to practice past simple 'be'

-Ask the Ss fill the table in 7a with the questions in 5b (highlighted in pink) -Peer check -Use the table on the powerpoint presentation (same with 7a) -Ask Ss come to board them fill the table for WC. -Let them do 7b and 7c first individually then PW -Use anwer key HOs -Conduct the controlled practice in 10a with same precedures for FB

Stage 5 (Speaking) (9-12 minutes) • To develop receptive skill by speaking and correct errors

-Ask the Ss add 5 questions like 10a then ask them to the partners. -Take notes of the misuses of them while monitoring. -At the end of the lesson correct them as a WC FB on the board.
