Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students develop their reading and speaking skills and they also learn some vocabulary related to traveling through guided discovery based on a reading text from a magazine interview. The lesson starts with a discussion about countries the students have been to or would like to visit one day. This is followed by skim reading where students read the text very quickly to get an idea about the whole text and complete the magazine's interview using some questions. The second task is "Scanning for specific informationl" in which students read the text more carefully and answer some pre-questions focusing on specific information. Finally there is some free practice via a final discussion.

Main Aims

  • The main aim of the lesson is for Ss to practise their reading skills. In particular, "Skimming for Gist" and "scanning for specific information'' through the context of traveling.

Subsidiary Aims

  • There are also two sub aims, Ss practise their speaking skills and learn new vocabulary. After this lesson students will be able to talk about and describe the jouneys they have had or would like to have in the future.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Before the lesson, get some pictures of different landmarks of countries all over the world and ask students if they are familiar with them or not, which countries they are in and what they know about those countries. After that, ask students whether they can guess the topic of the lesson or not. Later on, put Ss into pairs and show the questions of Ex:1 on the projector and let them discuss them. Set a time limit and monitor closely while the students are perfoming the activity and offer help if necessary.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

To pre-teach blocking vocabulary, put the students into groups and tell them that you are going to say the meanings of some words which are on the text, and their job is to try to find that word faster than the other groups in order to get a point. The teacher starts by saying: In paragraph 4, which word means ''different from others''. The fastest group that says ''unusual'' gets a point. Then the teacher asks about the part of speech of unusual(adjectice). Then, the teacher models and drills the word. After that, the teacher repeats the same thing with other items of vocabulary: In paragraph 4 also, ''to hurry after someone to catch him'' which is ''chased''. Then, the teacher asks about the part of speech of ''chase'' and whether it a regular or irregular verb. In paragraph 6, a word that means, ''the air, water and land on which people, animals and plants live'' which is ''environment''. At the end, the teacher counts the points and announces the winner.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

The teacher tells the Ss that they will read the interview quickly and try to match the questions (from a to f) with the answers of Simon (from 1 to 6).Set a time limit (3 minutes). After the Ss finish, the teachers puts them in pairs and asks them to check the answers with their partners. Finally, the teacher provides a whole class feedback.

While-Reading#2 (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

The teacher tells the Ss that they are going to read the text one more time- more closely this time- to find the answers for the questions of Ex: 3. The teacher shows the questions on the projector. The teacher allows sufficient time this time (6 minutes). The teachers monitors the Ss while they are trying to find the answers for the questions. The teacher offers help if necessary. When the students are done, the teachers asks them to check the answers in pairs before the whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Production (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher puts the students in groups and then writes a question on the WB. The teacher asks the students to discuss the question. The question is: What problems might you face when you travel abroad? and how can you deal with them? The Ss start discussing the question in their groups while the teacher monitors them and listens in on their progress. The teacher elicits or gives feedback either on the content or the performance. Finally, the teacher gives feedback on the language that students used and might highlight and correct mistakes that the learners made.
