Lesson plan TP4- Grammar Lesson (Starting New Jobs) - Sonia
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the Conditional I through guided discovery based on brief reading texts about people who gave up a job to start a new one. The lesson starts with recalling different jobs . This is followed by pre-teaching a few vocabulary items through a guided discussion that leads to the presentation of Conditional I as well as a set of conjunctions. This is followed by jigsaw reading, and related coursebook exercises as a controlled practice. Finally, there is some free practice by writing about what one is going to do after today's class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Recall what we last worked on. - Pass around the ball to suggest examples of jobs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Discussing the images on the slides to present the new vocabulary items. - Handing out the three brief texts to do gist reading to answer the pre-question: Why did these people resign from their work?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Re-reading the short texts to find who said each. - Clarifying the grammatical rule based on the first example from the matching exercise. Relying on timelines , going through CCQs, and doing back chaining. - Expanding on the rule via substitutions (conjunction)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Working on a set of sentences to assess them: deciding on the wrong ones.(GW) - Moving around to check with the other groups.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Controlled Practice - Working individually on the sentence completion in Task2. - Exchanging work to do peer correction. Free Practice - Jotting down the activity each is going to do after the class. - Carrying on using the conjunctions, individually. -
