Main Aims

  • • By the end of the lesson ss will have practised reading for gist and reading for specific information in the context of talking about a strange night in a haunted hotel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • 1. to practice listening for specific information. 2. to practice speaking 3. to learn new vocabulary words

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss 4 pictures. Ask students about how many pictures they can see. Then ask ss what they can see in every picture. In the end, ask students to guess the topic of the lesson.

Pre-Reading/Listening (15-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

show ss a picture for a ghost to elicit the different prepositions they know. Ask CCQs to make sure that they understand the differences between these prepositions. Drill the question (where's the ghost). Write the question on the board and discuss the form of the question. Ask ss to match the pictures of the ghost with the prepositions they describe. In open pairs ss ask and answer questions about the prepositions. Divide the class into two groups; one of them is called Tom and one off them is called mom. Every Tom has to ask his mother about where his things are and mom has to answer using the prepositions. Pre-teach some vocabulary words that might block their understanding while they are reading the text. Put pictures on the board. Then elicit the words. Ask CCQs to make sure they understand the words. Drill the words then write them on the board. Finally discuss the form of these words.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask ss to read the title of the reading passage and guess what it is about. Ask students to read for gist. Then ask ss to read the passage for specific information. Demonstrate with the students. Ss check their answers in pairs then show them the answers on the projector

While-Reading/Listening #2 (7-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask students to answer the following question which is read for specific details. Then ask them to check the answers that are on the walls of the room.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask ss if they think Stephan saw the ghost or not. Ask ss if they believe in ghosts. Ask ss if there are real ghosts. Ask ss where we see ghosts.
