In this lesson, students learn necessary vocabulary about work through a Test-Teach-Test procedure. The lesson starts with watching a 2-minute video,talking about one's job and expressing preferences. Then, the presentation will be through classifying the words and phrases in focus into two different categories. This is followed by a controlled practice activity. Finally, students will perform role plays as a free practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with the necessary vocabulary about jobs in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with the suitable expressions to express degrees of preferences while speaking about jobs.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Watch a video to predict the lesson topic.

Test #1 (4-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

- Match pictures with jobs to check if they are familiar with these jobs in TL. - Let them speak concisely about the work they do to engage them further. - Let them speak briefly about job preferences to develop their ranking skill while using the TL.

Teach (10-13 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

- Eliciting from the students the criteria for a job selection as well as a candidate selection. - Grouping printed notes entailing the words and phrases in focus distinctively according to an employer and a job candidate points of view, after having elicited some ideas from the students. - Working on the handouts to match the vocabulary in focus with the paraphrased ones, as a controlled practice activity.

Test #2 (8-9 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

write down a description of a job following the displayed items, Then, reading it is for the other students to guess the selected job.

Free practice (13-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Each student selects a cloud card with a word on. - Students listen to the teacher to form the pairs. - They sit in pairs and pick out of a selected small plastic tube an enclosed note. - Each pair works on the job indicated on the note to perform the role plays. - Volunteer pairs perform the exchanges.
