Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practiced speaking about and describing past habits through the use of the structure "used to+ verb"

Subsidiary Aims

  • - to practise recognizing words in a listening and putting them in the correct place

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • - To set lesson context and engage students

show students pictures of kids in a school playground and have them discuss in pairs what it is about and when they think it was taken.

Listening Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a song

- students will listen to the song for the first time - ask them to fill in the gaps on the worksheet with words in ex 1-b - pair check - put the answers on the whiteboard - students listen to the song a second time and are asked how does the singer feel about his school days? (happy - sad - in between?) what are the expressions in the song that show this? - group people with the same answer and let them discuss - write the expression " we used to laugh a lot" and "we used to cry a lot" on the board

Language clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

if I say I used to smoke , am I referring to the present, the past or the future? what do I mean? CCQs: - did I smoke in the past? - do I smoke now? - did I do it once or regularly? Using the example in the analysis box, contrast the use of the simple past and used to (meaning, form, pronunciation) instructions: - the purpose of this task is to help you understand the difference between the use of the simple past and used to - you are going to work in pairs (with 1 group of 3 students if number is odd) to compare the examples in the analysis box p 18 (show them before letting them look at their own workshees) - you don't have to write anything down - For example, if I say I used to play jumping rope everyday, what do you think it describes? a single ...., or reaaa......, or .................................... - you have 2 minutes to do this. ICQs: are you going to write anything down? are you going to decide in pairs? How much do you have?

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

students will be asked to look at pictures and clues page 19 and write 3 sentences using "used to" and 3 sentences using still and no longer/anymore demonstrate give 1 sentence for each do not forget ICQs

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

ss will play 2 truths 1 lie game. they will work in pairs for 5 minutes, each student will write down 3 statements about what they used to do when they were young and the other student has to decide which 2 statements are true and which one is false.
