Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with a warm up of the topic.

Ask ss to discuss Aristotle's definition of freedom.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask students to read for gist ; They read and come up with a title for the text

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Present pictures for each new word . Set the context and finally elicit the word . Drill if necessary . The new words and phrases are : made legal (adj) have the right to be fined (v) capital punishment (n) commit (v) compulsory (adj) smack (v)

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give the students a handout about the words and their definitions. Ask the students to work individually to match the words with their definitions. Then students check their answers in pairs.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in pairs and choose at least three topics from the text to discuss. Model and demonstrate one example for them with one of the students. content feedback.
