Description

In this lesson, students are going to read about the job opportunities available for expatriates in different countries. First, they are going to have a discussion about careers and countries in order to be engaged in the topic followed by a pre reading task focusing on anticipated new words. Secondly, students do three tasks in the while-reading task: finding the topic sentences, True False sentences, and a comprehension check task. Finally, there will be a personalized discussion task at the end.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Moving Abroad in the context of Career opportunities of expatriates in different counties and parts of the world
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Move Abroad in the context of Career opportunities of expatriates in different counties and parts of the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Vocabulary related to working abroad
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of working abroad

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To activate Ss' existing knowledge of the topic

- Ss will see a picture related to topic on the board - Ss will be asked to talk about two questions in pairs in order to be engaged in the topic - Ss will share their opinions with the class

Prediction Task (2-3 minutes) • To encourage Ss to think about the content of the topic

- Ss see the title of the reading passage they are going to read - The teacher asks them to predict what they are going to read - Ss share their thoughts with the class

Pre teach vocabulary (13-15 minutes) • To unblock key vocab needed to help students complete the reading task

-Ss do a a vocab gap filling task - They check their answers in a pair work - The teacher monitors to detect fast finishers and to make sure they are on the task - Teacher notes any problems - Ss read their answers and finally the teacher shows the answer key on the board

While-reading #1 (5 minutes) • To encourage students for general understanding and get an overview of the text

- Students are given the first sentences of each paragraph - The paragraphs are stuck on different parts of the wall in the classroom - They should stand up and try to match the sentences in groups - The group that finishes first is the winner - Students only have five minutes to do this as it is a skimming task - The teacher shows the answer key on the board

While-reading #2 (10-15 minutes) • To practice scanning for specific information

- Ss work individually to find out which sentence is correct and which one is false. They correct the false ones. - They check their answers in new pairs - The questions are projected on the board - Ss raise their hands and say if a sentences is correct or incorrect. If others disagree they should justify their answers and say which part of the text helped them find the answer. - Teacher might give extra time if Ss disagree on an answer to read the text more and justify their answers - Finally, the teacher shows the answer key on the board

While-reading #3 (10-15 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension and understanding of the text in depth

- Ss now have some questions to answer completely - The teacher monitors - Ss will check their answers in groups - Ss will share their answers with the class and they say which part of the text helped them answer the question and they should justify their answer if there is a disagreement - The teacher projects the answer on the board

Post reading (10-15 minutes) • To develop oral fluency by providing an opportunity to react to the text and personalize the topic

- Ss have the opportunity to have a personalized discussion - Ss discuss the questions the teacher gives them in groups - The teacher monitors to take note of any mistakes and avoid some Ss using L1 - Ss will share their answer with the class
