Description

For this lesson students will be presented with three photos of famous homes and will complete a listening exercise.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put photos on the board with magnets. Ask students to stand up and have a look at the photos to discuss what they think about them. "Look at the photos of the three famous homes." Where are they? Who do you think lived there?

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Write vocabulary on the board and elicit answers through nomination. Specify that the words are all nouns. Add IPA based on student comprehension if need be. Use demo pictures on the board if need-be.

Gist Activity (8-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Number the photos of the famous houses on the board. Put students in pairs. Hand out worksheet. Ask students as a pair to listen to the audio samples and decide which photo is being spoken of in order. Peer-check.

Detailed Reading Task (14-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task

Switch student pairs and have them unfold the worksheet. Instruction: Listen to the audio and fill in True or False while re-playing audio for detailed listening. Be sure to monitor students, checking for correct answers and make note in order to call on them during feedback.

Post-Listening - Free Practice (9-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Anchor in a horseshoe and ask students "Do you live near any famous home, castles, or haunted houses?" If the students don't live near any such landmarks than instead ask students if they have ever been to a haunted house before or if they have ever seen a scary movie that included Ghosts, towers, hauntings, castles, prisoners, or Dracula.
