Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of magical places

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss the photos of a magical place in Istanbul (which people believe their marriage wishes can come true) Elicit answers from students about the place Ask them to discuss the statements showed in ppt with their partners: Do you believe in the spiritual? Have you been there or any places like it? Have you ever made a wish in places like this? Would you try this kind of ways to change your life? Or to make it better? Or to find a new partner? Or to get married? Monitor them if they needed help.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show Ss the photos of the magical places in the text Let them guess and write with their partners about -where these places are -what is magical about these places -for what people visit these place Ask them to stick their guesses on the w/b (to check them later) Pre-teaching vocabulary Give them a vocabulary matching exercise to prepare them for the text. Ask them peer-check Elicits the word stresses and drill some of the problematic vocabulary chorally and individually.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Tell Ss read the text and see how close their guesses are Also, tell them they will have a "memory test" after reading Before memory test they go to the board and check their guesses before reading the text W/C feedback about how close their guesses are

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Let's see what you remember Tell Ss to answer questions in the HO given (first without text) Then let them open the text and check each other's answers Monitor them to make sure they get the task

#Optional Stage (5-8 minutes) • To attract Ss' focus on the language used in the reading text

If there is time or they aren't clear about the structure "impersonal passive forms", focus on it with reading text analysis and some exercises Give them the HO Ask them "What's another way of saying the following sentences?" Let them find the answers in the text. Check in pairs If still not very clear or there is enough time, Give one extra exercise to do with their partners including sentences to change by keeping the meaning the same If needed do the first sentence as an example in open class

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss which one of these places they would like to visit and why. Let them discuss in pairs choosing the place and giving reasons. Monitor them if they need help. Give w/c feedback and share interesting ideas.
