First & Second Conditionals

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the difference between first and second conditional through guided discovery based on a listening about to speaker's plans and wishes. This is followed by a controlled activity in which Ss make full sentences with the grammar points. The lesson ends with a free practice of the two forms in a speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of first and second conditionals in the context of plans and wishes through listening, quided discovery, and sepaking activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about plans and wishes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write the words 'Plans' and 'Wishes' on the board. Give one example of your plan and wish. Put Ss in pairs. Ss list their plans and wishes. Ask Ss to the board. Get a general feedback.

Test #1 (3-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give Ss Test 1 containing 10 incomplete sentences. Give Ss time to complete the sentences individually. Put them in pairs to check. Show the Test on the board. Ask Ss to the board to fill in the blanks.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Give listening for gist activity to Ss. Play the audio. Ss listen. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and mark the answers. Give listening for specific details. Play the audio. Ss listen. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and mark the answers. Give the first part of guided discovery handout. Ss match the pictures and sentences. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and mark the answers. Give the second part of guided discovery handout. Ss complete the formulas by filling in the blank. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and mark the answers. Give the third part of guided discovery handout. Ss write the contracted forms. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and write the answers. Give the controlled practice. Ss make sentences with the words. Ss check in pairs. Ss come to the board and write the answers.

Test #2 (3-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Give Ss the Test again. Ss fill in the blanks. Ss check in pairs. Give the key. Ss do a final check. Asnwer any possible questions.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In groups, Ss talk about the answers to two free questions. Ss take note three best ideas in their handout. Ss share their ideas with the class.
