Description

In this lesson , students will learn a bout the disadvantages of technology based on a reading text . The lesson starts with a discussion a bout technology and how the writer feels about it . Finally there is some controlled practice and free practice via a debate.

Materials

Abc projector, board, markers, handouts

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Machines behaving badly in the context of showing the disadvantages of technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of showing the advantages and disadvantages of technology

Procedure

The Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • Activating students prior knowledge a bout the reading topic.

- Show the ss pictures of some misuses of technology. -Have ss discuss with each other 1- How do they feel a bout technology ?Why? 2- From the title , does the writer feel positively or negatively a bout technology ?

Pre-reading (10-10 minutes) • pre-teaching needed vocabulary for the text .

- Ask ss to look at the pictures and listen to the teacher for setting the context of the new words to elicit them. - Write the words on the board. - drill if necessary. 1- flick through----- is to quickly change from one television channel to another. 2- show off --- to show people something that you are very proud of so that they will admire it 3-wait on hold--- to wait to speak to someone on the phone ( I have been waiting on hold). 4-anti-social--- harmful to society-avoiding spending time with other people. 5-text speak--The way words are spelled in text messaging and online chats like 'str8' for straight

while-reading (7-10 minutes) • students read for gist

-Ask students to read the headings . - They don't need to read in detail, only to match the headings and paragraphs. -Students work in pairs to check their answers. - Provide the answer key on the board.

while-reading (10-10 minutes) • students read for details( specific information)

- Ask ss to read again to answer questions on page 80 practice 5. - SS answer individually. - ss check their answers in pairs. -provide the answer key on board.

Post reading ( Follow up )free speaking practice (8-8 minutes) • students practice speaking

-Using cards , students can talk a bout the uses, advantages and disadvantages of technology as in pairs then as a whole group.
