Main Aims

  • To practise new vocabularies in the context of extracts from news items.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Society and Change in the context of Extracts from news items.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show pictures of different diagrams to introduce the context. Ask the ss the following questions: Is this arrow going up? Is that one going down? Elicit the answer and introduce these vocabularies Decreasing Increasing rising deteriorating.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask the SS to read the questions Give clear instructions about the listening activity. play the audio let the students check their answers together. Show Answer Keys. Ask Ss to listen again and find words and phrases which helped them to find the answers. Ask the students to put in groups the words and phrases with the same meaning.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask the students to work in groups and complete the table. Ask the ss to check answers together. then listen and check their answers. Demonstrate the first word and highlight the stressed syllable Ask them to mark the stressed syllable. ask the ss to check answers together. listen to the audio drilling

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful and freer practice

Give the ss handouts and ask them to draw the up and down arrows next to the words. Demonstrate the first one and ask the ss to fill in gaps using the correct form. Ask the ss to check their answer together. Give feedback. Semi-Controlled Practice Make discussions about the titles of the 3 paragraphs. Show answer keys to check answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Stick on the board topics to discuss about our country Demonstrate one of the topics. Ask the ss to develop the conversation using why? How? etc. Ask the ss to work in pairs then swap the partner.
