In this lesson, students will be working on their reading skills. The lesson will start by watching a small part of the 'operatunity 6' recording ' and discussing it. Blocking vocabulary clarification followed by skimming, detailed and scanning exercises. Post reading will be a speaking activity about whether Ss would consider joining talent shows like Operatunity or not and why.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Jobs in the context of an opera talent show

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of talent shows


Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • setting the context for the reading text

T plays the recording 'operatunity 6' from 3.03 - 4.20 and asks Ss the following questions: 'What did you see on the video? Can describe it to me?' 'What was the lady doing? What kind of music was she singing?' 'There were other people in the room as well, who were they?' 'Can anybody take a guess about what today's topic is?'

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • to clarify blocking vocabulary for better understanding of the text

'Now, you will be given a HO with sentences on the left side and pictures on the right. Work with your partners to find and match the underlined words to the correct pictures. You have 2-3 minutes.' ICQ's: so are you working alone or with your partner? WCF

Reading for gist (5-6 minutes) • to check understanding of the general idea of the text

'Look at ex. 3a. There are 5 headings. You will now read the text and match the paragraphs A-E with the correct headings 1-5. Try to underline the words or sentences that helped you decide on the answer. You will work individually. You have 3-4 minutes' Pair check Answers on board

Intensive Reading (12-14 minutes) • Reading for detail

'You will now read the text carefully and answer ex 2. You will work alone and then check your answers with your partner. You have around 8 minutes.' Pair check followed by WCF

Scanning (5-6 minutes) • Reading for specific information

'At the bottom of the page, there is another box with a text. You will read the text and find the mistakes in the text (9) and correct them using the information given in the original text (the long text). You have around 3-4 minutes. You will work alone.' Pair check followed by WCF

Post Reading (4-5 minutes) • to practice speaking

'Now, in your groups, discuss whether you would consider entering competitions like Operatunity or The Voice and why? You have around 3 minutes.' WCF
