Materials

Abc English Unlimited
Abc Food Worksheet

Main Aims

  • Functional lexis

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are grouped into groups of three or four people to discuss a list of questions about food. Then we have a whole class discussion.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students are given the pictures on page 26 of the English Unlimited and the teacher asks them what they think the pictures are. Then we have a class discussion with the first two questions.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students look at the comments made by Aiko, Jenny, and Luz about convenience stores, local shops, markets, and supermarkets in their countries. They do this in their same groups to prepare for the connecting activity.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students go back to their groups and connect the sentences together. After discussing in groups and going over the answers as a class, we discuss our own opinions about where we like to shop for food.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher writes the words hot, good, happy, and open on the board and elicits the opposites of those words from the class. Then the students work together to find the opposites of the words in the 4a activity. This prepares them to listen to the recording and check their answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As a whole class, we discuss the questions at the bottom of page 26. We begin by eliciting a list of places where the students buy food and what they like and don't like about these options. Then we discuss the questions 5a and 5b.
