Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in speaking for accuracy and fluency in the context of being at a party

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about conversation of two people in the context of meeting at a party

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a hangman game on the w/b to elicit the word "party". Ask students if they remember it from yesterday. Start playing the game and get letters from Ss. Ask them "Do you like parties?" and "What is a party?" Then show the picture of Flavia and Terry to Ss. Let them tell what they see in the picture Ask Ss who they are, where they are, what they are doing etc

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Introduce Flavia and Terry. Tell them "Guess! Is Flavia Turkish?" "Where do they come from?" Give them the book page Play the recording to let Ss check their predictions Elicit the answer (Flavia is Italian, Terry is English) Give them time to read the sentences of Terry Check understanding of "love" and "very much" Play the first sentence as an example and elicit the answer from Ss Make it clear that they will focus on what Terry says. Let them listen and tick what Terry says. Tell check their answers in pairs. Go over the answers by playing conversation again. Give each pair half of the script of the recording cut into dialogues of two. Tell them to fill in the gaps as far as they remember Then they will check the other group's answers and put the papers as a group and order the dialogues Show them the answer key on the W/B to come and check in together

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Eliciting answers from the Ss for functional language Create and atmosphere that you meet them and elicit answers by miming Then, put the sentences on the board with gaps this time Tell them complete the gaps in pairs After they finish tell them say it out loud Ask CCQs Then drill the sentences by showing sound linkage etc. on the board

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Create a party atmosphere with music, visuals and some other stuff. Tell Ss they are going to roleplay being at a party and meeting new people Remind them questions they have just learnt. Then explain they aren't themselves Explain Ss to invent a new identity. Give the example of James Bond cartoon and make Ss do a sample dialogue with Bond's info. Remind them expressions they can use when meeting new people like "Nice to meet you. You too." Ask Ss to make notes for their new characters. Monitor and help with ideas and vocabulary. Demonstrate an example of a pair. Then tell them to stand up to do the role-play Monitor, let them enjoy and take notes of major errors to feed back on later.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Write the major errors and good language of Ss on the w/b Tell them check these sentences with their partners And decide if they are correct If it is correct, tell them to put a tick next to the sentence If it is not, tell each group to come the board and write the correct form
