Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of lifelong learning

Subsidiary Aims

  • Vocabulary and Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Begin with a brief discussion about the students, asking when they started school. Then we can discuss school-related questions together. What subjects did they enjoy? Who were their favorite teachers? Where did they go to school?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students read the introduction to the radio program and then have a discussion about Luis, Pierre, and Margaret. The teacher asks the students predictive questions about them. Where are these people from? What are their jobs? How old are they?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

While listening to the recording, the students answer the questions and try to match the pictures with the characters

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher asks the students if they know any students like Pierre, Margaret, and Luis. Which one did they like the most and why? Which one are they the most like?

Vocabulary exercise (3-5 minutes) • To assess students' knowledge of vocabulary

Students fill in the blanks in exercise 7 individually and then check with their peers. Then we go over the words together

Stress Worksheet (10-12 minutes) • To identify stress in words

Students listen to the teacher read the vocabulary words in 7a (except school) and draw a bullet point over the stress. Then they compare with their peers and the teacher gives them feedback
