Description

Your lesson sets the context for today’s lessons, and focuses on vocabulary. The Ss are aware of (attributive) adjectives and know how to use them to describe nouns. They also know where to use them in sentences, e.g. “I have a pretty sister” vs “My sister is pretty”. However, for some this will be the first time they will look at predicative adjectives – adjectives that cannot be used before the noun.

Materials

Abc Global Workbook
Abc Global

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of predicative adjectives in the context of Family and travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • to get the Ss interested in the topic

Talk about my family

Presentation (10-12 minutes) • working with predicative adjectives

Put pictures on the walls. Give the Ss the adjectives in ex1 – they match with the pictures. Check them. Then give Ss Vocab ex 1 – Ss work in pairs/small groups to match with definitions. Check them (maybe an answer key). Be prepared to deal with any questions about meaning – have examples ready to illustrate. Perhaps drill the pronunciation of a few of these

Language Focus (10-12 minutes) • focusing the language

Give Ss ex 2 – they work in pairs/small groups and decide which sentence is better. Do FB. Focus Ss on position of predicative adjectives. Contrast with other adjectives – using examples on the w/b elicit adjective position from the Ss

Controlled practice (14-16 minutes) • talking about predicative

Ss complete Wkbk-Vocab 1b – in pairs/small groups – check answers (maybe an answer key) Freer practice/personalisation – Prepare a couple of sentences about someone in your family using some adjectives – include 2 or 3 from Vocab ex1. Use this as an example to set up ex3. Ss describe someone in their family to their partners – try to use as many as adjectives as possible – monitor – give FB.

Personalisation/speaking (8-10 minutes) • Speaking

Prepare 5-6 questions for the Ss about them/their families using adjectives from Vocab ex1. (e.g. What time of day are you most awake? How often are you ill?” etc.). Ss interview each other (or do this as a mingling activity to get some movement in). Monitor – get FB on what Ss find out
