Description

Ss might already have been exposed to the past simple tense before, so this lesson is a review for the past simple tense using irregular verbs in the context of celebrations. The lesson starts with a review of the TL focussing on meaning, form and pronunciation, followed by a controlled practice and a semi-controlled practice allowing Ss to practice their speaking fluency using the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of simple past irregular verbs in the context of celebrations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluencyin telling the story of a celebration

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss reflect back on the blogs they read in the previous lesson to find out the time used in the texts (Past, Present or Future) Ss discuss in pairs.

Exposure/Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To focus Ss on the TL and provide context for the TL through texts

Ss work in small groups to do ex1 (without including was) Check with other groups Elicit answers W/C Ss work in small groups to find the infinitive of the verbs they found Elicit answers and ask Ss to right them on the board

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

Write down this sentence on the board 'we gave him a gold watch' elicit the meaning of the TL using CCQs and a timeline W/C Elicit the form of the sentence in the affirmative, negative and question highlight the form on the WB W/C Model and drill the pronunciation of some of the underlined verbs from ex 1 individually and W/C

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss read the text on p 63 and then answer 'where Scott was at midnight on the 31st December' Ss do ex 2 individually Pair check W/C FB Provide answers on the WB

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow Ss to use the TL

Ss do ex 3 in pairs Monitor to make sure they know how to make the questions Model and drill the questions Ss work in pairs and interview each other for ex 4 Monitor and take notes W/C FB and some error correction

Freer Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with the free practice of the TL.

Ss change pairs and tell each other about their previous partner's celebrations story Monitor and take notes FB and some error correction
