Ss learn giving directions via speaking activities.The lesson starts with eliciting prepositions they already know,the rest is learnt via demonstration and flashcards.''Where's the cafe?-It is oppsite the bank.'' The Ss look at the given city map and practice where the places on it are.''Where is the post office?-It is over there,near the cinema.''Next,the Ss learn giving directions via demonstration and gap fill activity and practice it via listening,speaking and game.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking using functional language. ''Go along this road and turn right.The cafe is on the left,opste the cinema.''

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of prepositions in the context of places in the city


Warm-up/Lead in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context about giving directions and engage students.

T:Is there bank near here?I don't have any money. S:Yes.It's opposite the reaturant. T:Ah there's a bank over there.Look at the pictures on the walls.Where's the cafe? S:It's near the supermarket. Stand up and wander in the class and ask each other where these places are in pairs.

Matching Activity (2-3 minutes) • To practice the prepositions

The Ss look at the prepositions of place pictures and match with the sentences in pairs and check via answer key.(activity2)

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The Ss look at the photo of Maria and learns about her.She's a student in Hampton and lives with Johnson family now.She has difficiulty in finding places and asks for help to a man.In pairs fill in the gaps with the correct places.Then listen and check(R7.10)

Productive Task(s) (5-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The Ss look at the map,read conversations and choose the corect word in pairs.After that they listen and check(R7.12).

Demonstration (6-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The Ss look at the HO and act out the dialogues in activity 8-a.

Game of giving directions. (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In 2 groups,the Ss give directions to the other groups members and they try to guess where the place is.

Review (3-4 minutes) • To ensure the TL is comprehended and form is covered.

The Ss tell about the the sentences we use to give directions.(go along,turn left..)
