Description

In this lesson, students will be better able to differentiate between the present simple and the present continuous. I will start my lesson with a lead in to generate interest and engagement for the students. I will use some pictures and a recorded track to present the target language. Later on, I will contrast the two tenses using the examples in the Analysis box on p11. (Meaning, form, pronunciation) There will be two exercises in the controlled practice stage. In the end, there will be freer practice in which students will ask and answer questions to each other using the target language.

Main Aims

  • After this lesson my students will be better able to differentiate between the present simple and the present continuous.

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this lesson ss will practice their listening speaking skills to talk about habits and temporary situations or actions happening at the moment.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will distribute sheets of the lesson. I will ask my students to look carefully at the three pictures. Karina is showing a colleague some photos from her twenty-first birthday party. I will ask my ss some questions eliciting some ideas about the people who are in the pictures and ask them to predict their relationship with her. Can you guess who are the people in these pictures? What relationship can be between them and Karina?

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss listen and write Karina's relationship to each person. Exercise 1 P 10 Ss check answers in pairs first. Answer keys on board

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Contrast the two tenses using the examples in the Analysis box on p11. (Meaning, form, pronunciation) I will distribute a handout in which ss have to match some of the (explanations) and their meanings. This step will assure that the ss will be able to understand what they should do in the next step. SS match examples of the target language in column A with explanations in column B Pair check, o/c feedback I will write the usage of each tense on the right side of the board. I will ask my students to underline the present simple verbs like this ________ and present continuous verbs like this . I will add the form to the board under the usage.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Controlled practice 1 Exercise 1 p 11 Underline the correct tense Pair check, O/C feedback Controlled practice 2 Exercise 2 p 11 Complete the sentences with questions (in the you form) in the present simple or continuous. Pair check, O/C check

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss ask each other questions from ex.2 or any imaginary questions in pairs, then report answers to other students. Feedback (content and linguistic)
