In this lesson, the students will have practised listening for gist and detail in the context of manners in different countries. The students will have also practised free speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Are English people too polite? in the context of Four people of different nationalities who have all lived in England meet and talk about their experience with English people.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The students will have practised free speaking in the context of manners in different countries.


Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Bring up slide no. 1 (4 people in a restaurant, English/British theme) Get the students to talk about what they see and what they think is happening.

Pre-listening stage (5-8 minutes) • To elicit vocabulary ahead of the listening task

Individual slides with images to elicit the following words: (to) fail, Latin people, an economist, (to be) extrovert, football hooligans The last slide in this series displays all the 'new' words'; ask a few CCQ (pronunciation, meaning)

Listening for gist (8-10 minutes) • Students practise listening for gist

Make sure everyone understands the expression 'too polite' Introduce the listening task and give instructions, ICQ (ss to work alone); hand out the questions and ask ss to fold the paper in half. Start playing the audio (track #45) Stop after each speaker (and if required have ss give feedback after each of them)

Listening for detail (15-15 minutes) • Students practise listening for detail and answer questions

Explain procedure for the second part, ICQ Students to read questions 1-9 carefully Re-play audio, stop after every speaker SS discuss answers at the end; then check with answer key (will be put up on the walls) If required, provide additional feedback

Free speaking (8-10 minutes) • Students will have practised free speaking in the context of manners in different countries (and specific situations)

Slide to demonstrate the task with the 'DRIVING' situation. Elicit meaning and form and have ss practise the language/form; CCQ (Time permitting), students will work in groups and discuss one of the following situations: In a restaurant / Visiting people / Men and women / Greeting people (the number of topics and groups will depend on how many students are present)
