Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about homeschooling in the context of education

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a list in the context of distance education


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss some pictures of "homeschooling" and normal schools and asks Ss "what's the difference between these pictures?" (elicit study at home, parents teaching children...) in pairs talk about which one do you like more

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks Ss to match new vocabulary with their meanings. then check their answers in pairs. finally, T checks and gives feedback.

While-Reading #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T asks Ss to read the text fast and select the best topic for it (from 3 available). then they check answers in pairs.

While-Reading #2 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

T divides Ss into two groups (green and red). one of them reads the first half of the reading (advantages) and the other group reads the second half (disadvantages). then T pairs up Ss from different groups to tell each other about their own halves.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss do the listening on page 11. First part A, check their answer with T. then part B, check their answers in pairs.

Pre-writing (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with some information they are going to write about

Ss read part 3 on page 11 and talk to their group about advantages and disadvantages of distance education and make a list.

Writing (10-15 minutes) • To make Ss produce a paragraph about the information they have prepared

T asks Ss to write a paragraph about advantages and disadvantages of distance education using the sample and the reading on page 10 as models.

Speaking (5-10 minutes) • To make Ss talk about advantages and disadvantages

Ss do part 4 on page 11 in pairs
