Main Aims

  • To provide controlled listening for gist and specific information by watching a video called 'Indian Railway' about an Indian man and his work and family life in a city called Shimla.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide SS with a short reading for a semi-controlled speaking activity about SS' personal lives and work lives.

Procedure

1.Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • to inroduce the topic and create interest

T hangs some pictures about India and Indian culture on the walls as a gallery. SS walk around the class in pairs and discuss what they see in the pictures. They try to guess what this country is and how life is in this country. Later T elicits their answers as a WC.

2.Pre-Listening (7-8 minutes) • to provide background knowledge about the video by a detailed reading practice.

SS do the quiz in exercise 1a in 2 teams by discussing the possible answers. T writes the question to find out the answer on WB. 'What's the answer to question 1?' And the answer: 'It's a.' 2 or 4 SS look for the hidden answers and when they find them groups ask the Q they answer.

3.Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • to pre-teach vocabulary in the video 'Indian Railway'

SS receive pictures to match with the vocabulary in the glossary- ex.2a in groups. Later they receive definitions to match them. Individuals from groups go and check other groups answers. WC FB is given. Ask CCQs; 'I carry bags of people who travel. I'm a....' 'Humphrey controls the train station. He is a...' 'What do you make when you say 'it will rain tomorrow'? You make a...'

4.Listening for gist (5-6 minutes) • to provide a controlled listening for gist

Tell SS: 'You are going to watch a video about a family in India called 'Idian Railway' watch the video and write a number for people in the order you see them.' 'If you see Sanjay first write 1 then write 2 for the next person' Ask ICQs. 'How many names are there in the exercise?' 'Will we see all of them for the first time in one scene or in different scenes?' 'Do we match people on the HO or do we write numbers next to them?' ' What number do we write next to the person we see first?Second? Third?' SS watch the video 'Indian Railway' and put the people in the order they see them. They compare answers in pairs. One student puts the people which are sticked on WB in the order . SS chechk her/his answers.

5.Listening for specific information (5-7 minutes) • to practice understanding specific information in a controlled listening activity

SS read the sentences and discuss the answers in pairs. They watch the video again and choose the correct alternative for each Q individually. WC FB is given.

6.Listening for details (4-5 minutes) • to check listening comprehension.

Put the SS into 2-3 groups depending on the SS number. Give out Sentences from the video HO tell them to write the initials of the person who said this sentence in the video. They work in groups in 2 minutes. T projects SS on the WB. Later they stick post-its with the initials on them next to the sentence in a competition. WC FB is given.

7.Post-listening (7-8 minutes) • to provide controlled speaking for accuracy and improve productive skills

T makes a sentence about herself changing one of the sentences in ex. 4a then writes it on the board. Asks a student to make a sentence about her/himself. SS go over sentences first individually and exchange their answers in pairs. Later SS stand in a line and make the sentences again so they are true for them in turns.
