Description

SS will be introduced to the topic of staying at hotels and some key vocabulary related to it. Then SS will learn about the BBC TV comedy Fawlty Towers through a reading activity and the rest of the lesson will continue in its context. SS will have a pre-teaching vocabulary activity, then watch a short clip from Fawlty Towers and complete listening for gist and listening for specific info tasks.

Main Aims

  • To help SS develop their listening skills, sub-skills listening for gist and listening for specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide SS with some key vocabulary needed when staying at a hotel.
  • To practice SS' reading skills, with sub-skill reading for gist

Procedure

1. Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To engage students in the topic of staying in hotels. To present some key vocabulary related to the topic.

When you go on holiday, where do you sleep?(hotel, hostel) Today we will talk about hotels. Match the pictures to the words. (vocab list: lift, restaurant, stairs, keycard, reception, internet connection, room service, parking) -HO (p.14, Ex. 2A) -Monitoring -Peer check FB - WG chorus - What's picture A?(lift) etc. CCQs: Is this a keycard? (no) What is it? (keys) Do we have a lift here in British Side? (yes) Do you use the lift or the stairs?

2. Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To practice the vocabulary used in Stage 1

Continue with your partner. Point and say the word. -Monitoring

3. Freer Practice (2-4 minutes) • To give SS a chance to practice the vocab from Stage 1 in a more personalised activity

-Group SS into groups of 3 or 4 What do you need in a hotel? For example, I don't like walking, so I need a lift. I don't like stairs. And I don't need a parking, because I don't have a car. Talk with your group about what is important for you in a hotel. Use the words from the exercise. -Monitoring

4. Pre-teaching vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To present vocabulary related to Fawlty Towers. To introduce the characters from the comedy.

-Write the words 'hotel, guest, manager, waiter, waitress, animal, reception desk' on the WB Find these words in the pictures. -HO -Monitoring -Peer check -FB - nominate a different S from a different pair to read out his/her answer

5. Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To give information about Fawlty Towers and prepare the SS for the next stages. To have the SS practice the receptive skill reading.

Do you know these people? You will read some information about them and answer the question. Work alone. -HO p.14, Ex. 1 Do you read or listen? Do you talk together or write your answer alone? -Monitoring -Peer check FB - WG What's her name? What is her job? What's his name? What is his job? Is it a film or a TV programme? So, is it one part or many parts? etc.

6. Listening for gist (7-9 minutes) • To improve the receptive skill listening, sub-skill listening for gist.

=Pre-listening preparation for Ex. 3A= Read the sentences and think, are they True or False? -HO p.14, Ex. 3A Who is Manuel? Where is the moose? Show it to me. Who is the Major? Is he in these pictures? Who is Basil Fawlty? Angry...When you are angry, are you happy? =Listening for gist= Now you will watch a video from the comedy Fawlty Towers and answer - are these sentences True or False. Do you speak or listen? -Project the clip -Peer check FB - pick one S to read out loud his/her answers

7. Listening for specific info (5-6 minutes) • To improve the receptive skill listening, sub-skill listening for specific information

You will watch the video again and underline the correct word. -HO p.14, Ex. 3B Are you writing anything?(no) Just underline. -Project clip -Peer check FB - WG

8. Free Speaking Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide SS with opportunity to use the vocabulary they've learnt and practice giving opinion about a certain topic

Did you like Fawlty Towers? Do you think it is funny? Why? Get up, find a partner and talk about Fawlty Towers, why you like it or why you don't like it. Talk about your favourite TV programmes. You can use these questions, if you want. -Write discussion questions on WB When I clap, change partner. -Monitoring
