Description

In this lesson, SS will review and practice vocabulary of family members. They will also practice reading for gist and details in a reading activity about family. The topic of families is introduced in the lead-in stage using a trailer for the movie 'Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story'. After the video, I will ask them the importance of 'Family' in our lives and the impact of the family in each one of them. Then I will pr-teach some vocabulary using a small test for the students by eliciting the meaning of some words. after that, I will give the students the form, meaning. and the pronunciation of each word. Then I will give the students a text to skim. and choose a title for it. After skim reading, the students will read for details followed by a small test consisting of 5 questions on the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Family Vocabulary in the context of Family characteristics.

  • To provide practice speaking using a text about Family in the context of Family characteristics.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The topic of families is introduced in the lead-in stage using a trailer for the movie 'Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story'. After the video, I will ask them the importance of 'Family' in our lives and the impact of the family in each one of them.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language

First, I will give my instruction which is, the students read the text and underline the Adjectives that can be used to describe family members Individually. Then I will ask them to check in pairs, followed by feedback.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To provide calrification of the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will show the students pictures using PowerPoint slides and try to elicit the word that describes the picture from them. Then I will give them CCQs to make sure that they got the meaning. Then I will drill the word three times then I will ask them to drill as groups. Then i will give them the form. Note(I can start with Form first before the drilling).

Controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

A small Matching exercise: Siblings: happy: cheerful: loving: stressed: intelligent: sincere: strong: proud: humble: tough: role model: With the list of their meaning 'We have words and the meaning while chesting, try to match the words with their meaning' Teacher demonstrates the first word. First individually then Pair work, Then giving the feedback.

Semi-Controlled (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will divide the class into two groups and let each group choose one person to represent them, this person will sit facing the students with his back facing the board, the second team will choose a word and write it on the board, and the first team will have to describe it without saying the exact word. each team will get 2 minutes to get the word right. If a team got the word right, the team scores one point. The winner will take the cakes I prepared as a winner's prize.

Freer Practice. (7-9 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will ask the students to set in two groups back-to-back. Then I will divide them into pairs each student is a pair with the student behind his back. each pair will have a piece of paper, using this paper to send a message introducing himself and his family using the Adjectives in the past activities.

Freer Practice. (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will choose random students to describe their family members using the adjectives they learned during the past activities.
